Sector covered in the first phase 2002/03: Other Business Services

Services enterprises attributed to "other business services" (NACE Rev. 1 74) cover a wide range of activities. On the 3-digit-level there are eight sub-groups, on the 4-digit-level the number of sub-groups rises to 15. Activities covered in this sector

Code Activity
74.1 Legal, accounting, book-keeping and auditing activities; tax consultancy; market research and public opinion polling; business and management consultancy; holdings
74.2 Architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy
74.3 Technical testing and analysis
74.4 Advertising
74.5 Labour recruitment and provision of personnel
74.6 Investigation and security activities
74.7 Industrial cleaning
74.8 Miscellaneous business activities not else classified (for example: photographic activities, packaging activities, secretarial and translation activities)

Common characteristics of all these sub-sectors are

  • the low degree of final demand which comes from private households
  • the dominance of small and medium sized enterprises in each of these business service industries
  • and the high importance of national or even regional markets for most of these enterprises, as compared to the global markets in most manufacturing industries.

E-business activities may have a severe impact especially on those other business industries where information gathering, processing and dissemination is a fundamental part of the overall service production process. In these fields, e-business applications facilitate the creation of international business services markets and - probably - will therefore heavily affect the future size structure of enterprises in these industries.
